• 🏝A unique autonomous, demilitarized, and entirely Swedish-speaking archipelago in the Baltic Sea, officially an autonomous province of Finland.
• 🏳️Its flag, adopted in 1954, blends Swedish cultural symbols with Finnish sovereignty: the blue field and yellow Nordic cross mirror the flag of Sweden and highlight the archipelago's deep historical, linguistic and cultural ties to it (Swedish is the sole official language), while the inner red cross — drawn from the red and yellow of the Finnish coat of arms — marks the islands' political status as an autonomous region under Finnish sovereignty. Before this design was officially granted, islanders unofficially used a blue-yellow-blue horizontal triband from 1922 to 1954.
• 🕊️Completely weapon-free — Åland is a fully demilitarized and neutral zone. No military fortifications, bases or operations are permitted, and native male residents are legally exempt from compulsory military service in the Finnish armed forces. This status dates back to the mid-19th century.
• ⚖️Åland's right of domicile helps safeguard local autonomy: it is generally required to own real estate, conduct business, or vote in Åland Parliament elections; permits may be available in some cases.
• 📐Åland has a special tax status outside the EU VAT area, which can allow duty-free sales on eligible ferry routes.
