• ❄️The unique coldest, windiest and driest continent on Earth. It does not belong to any single country and is governed under the international Antarctic Treaty, which preserves the continent for peace and science.
• 🤝The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959, reserves Antarctica for peaceful purposes and scientific cooperation while preserving differing positions on territorial claims.
• 🏜️The largest desert on Earth — a desert is defined by its lack of precipitation, not by hot sand. Antarctica is the largest polar desert on the planet, and the McMurdo Dry Valleys are among its driest regions, receiving very little precipitation.
• 🕰️Living outside time zones — all lines of longitude converge at the South Pole, so the continent technically spans every time zone simultaneously. In practice, research stations either use the time zone of their home country or of the closest supply hub (for example, McMurdo Station uses New Zealand time).
• 🔬Scientific observations and results from Antarctica are exchanged freely under the Antarctic Treaty, supporting international research on climate, ice and ecosystems.
