It was deliberately designed as a neutral symbol of peace between the island's Greek and Turkish communities. The white background symbolizes peace, harmony, and neutrality. The copper-orange silhouette of the island displays a map of Cyprus — the copper color refers directly to the island's historical abundance of copper ore, from which Cyprus derives its name (from the Latin word Cuprum).
