• 🌊A fascinating French-speaking country in West Africa, located along the coast of the Gulf of Guinea. Benin is a land rich in history, formerly known as the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey, and is widely celebrated as the birthplace of the Voodoo religion and home to remarkable stilt architecture.
• 🏳️First adopted in 1959 (when the nation was known as the Republic of Dahomey) and readopted in 1990 following the end of the Marxist regime. The vertical green stripe represents the hope of a young democracy and the lush, fertile lands and palm groves of the south. The horizontal yellow stripe symbolizes the nation's natural treasures and minerals, as well as the savannah grasslands in the north. The horizontal red stripe honors the courage of the ancestors and the blood shed by those who fought for freedom and independence. The green, yellow and red color scheme pays tribute to the Pan-Africanist movement, representing unity among independent African nations.
• 🚣‍♀️ Ganvie — the Venice of Africa — situated in the middle of Lake Nokoué in southern Benin lies Ganvie, the largest stilt-house village in Africa. Home to around 30,000 people, the entire community lives in wooden huts perched on bamboo stilts. It was founded centuries ago by the Tofinu people as a safe haven to escape Dahomey slave raiders, who were forbidden by religious law from entering water. Today, everything from schools to markets operates on boats.
• 🔮Vodun is an important religious and cultural tradition in Benin. The country observes an annual Vodun festival on 10 January, while its constitution establishes a secular state.
• ⚔️The real-life 'Dahomey Amazons' — the former Kingdom of Dahomey was famous for its elite, all-female military regiment called the Mino ('our mothers') or Ahosi. Dubbed the 'Dahomey Amazons' by Western explorers due to their extreme combat readiness and legendary fearlessness, they successfully defended their kingdom for decades. This historic female army served as the direct inspiration for the Dora Milaje warriors in Marvel's Black Panther universe.
