• ✨A massive, landlocked country in the heart of West Africa. Mali is the cradle of great medieval empires, a historic center of Saharan scholarship, and the homeland of the wealthiest individual in human history.
• 🏳️The flag of Mali, adopted in 1961, features three vertical stripes of equal size in Pan-African colors. The green stripe at the hoist represents the fertility of the land, lush agriculture in the south and hope for a bright future. The yellow stripe in the center symbolizes the sun, purity and the country's vast mineral resources, particularly gold. The red stripe at the fly stands for the blood spilled by ancestors to secure independence and the courage of the Malian people.
• 👑In the 14th century, Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire, which became famous for its gold wealth and for his pilgrimage to Mecca.
• 🕌The mythical Timbuktu — located on the southern edge of the Sahara, Timbuktu was a legendary medieval hub of trade, culture and Islamic learning. It housed the historic University of Sankore, attracting thousands of scholars. For centuries 'Timbuktu' was used in the West as a metaphor for the most remote, unreachable place on Earth.
• 🧱The mud masterpiece of Djenné — the city of Djenné is home to the Great Mosque, the largest mud-brick (adobe) building in the world. Every year, during a massive community festival, the entire population of the city works together to replaster the mosque's walls with fresh mud to protect it from drying out and cracking.
